The packaging design is a product of the local agricultural cooperative of Kritsa. It features a unique glass bottle with a special shape, careful illustration, and typography. The illustration, designed in the engraving style, represents the traditional method of gathering olives in Crete. The typography complements the illustration, communicating the tradition and culture of the area in a modern way.
The bottle is made of white-painted glass, and the cap is made of dark natural wood. The black illustration and typography are silk screen printed. The bottle's size is 7.6x19.5cm, and it weighs 500 grams, with a volume range of 500ml. The packaging is designed to protect the quality of the olive oil, with the dark interior of the bottle shielding the oil from light. The wooden cap features a flow regulator for ease of use.
The design process began on February 1, 2017, and concluded on October 28, 2017. The project's primary challenge was to visually communicate the tradition of Kritsa in a modern way. The design team, including creative directors Manos Siganos, Dimitris Bokolas, and Konstantinos Papadopoulos, and Art Director Manos Siganos, successfully overcame this challenge, creating a design that perfectly communicates the high quality of the world-awarded extra virgin olive oil to the global market without losing the traditional character of the local area.
The design was based on extensive research into the tradition of Cretan culture, folk art, the value and quality of the olive oil, the special shape of the bottle, and the target group. The result is a packaging design that is both modern and traditional, reflecting the unique heritage of Kritsa and the exceptional quality of its olive oil.
The Kritsa Extra Virgin Olive Oil packaging design has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and innovation, winning the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2018. The award is given to designs that demonstrate remarkable expertise and innovation, showcasing a high level of excellence and evoking positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
